The Green Planet Initiative International has embarked on projects aimed at mitigating climate change. The community based approach to climate change mitigation project (CBACCMP) started with the establishment of contacts with the projects stakeholders in the three communities in Bakassi( Akwa-Obutong, Esuk-Okon and Edik Idim).
Stakeholders scheduled a planning meeting after community entry with chiefs and members of their cabinet on the 10th of June 2016. A total of five persons were invited from Esuk Okon, but ten attended; five persons from Akwa Obutong community but Fifteen attended, and five from Edik Idim with fifteen people in attendance. Two GPII staff and one board member were in attendance. The Planning Meeting was held in Bakassi, Local government Area of Cross River State on the 15th of June 2016.
The Goal of the planning meeting was to ensure the effectiveness, full participation and sustainability of the project and influence policies aimed at ensuring effective conservation practices and environmental management in Bakassi Local Government Area.
The objectives includes; Ensuring the active participation of five community stakeholders from each of the LGAs by the end of 1 year and to facilitate the linkages between the community members and the implementing organization (GPII).
At the meeting, questions were asked by some of the chiefs on the duration of the project, and if they were needed contribute to make the project a success. Members of the community that attended were asked to share their thoughts in addition to what the chiefs have said. The program director gave an overview of the project informing the community the commitment they had made was the needed contribution.
After the meeting the chiefs gave complimentary remarks, thanking GEF and GPII for choosing their communities in the midst of other communities and promised to put in their best to see the success of the project. The meeting achieved all expected result.
